Grading for Equity

Recently Michael Brown, principal of Winters Mill High School, endorsed a “Grading for EQUITY” keynote speech by Joe Feldman. We demand Michael Brown, the curriculum council, and the board clarify their stance on introducing “equity” into grading.

We demand Carroll County students be graded on the same scale regardless of their background. Additional educational resources should continue to be provided to students with IEP and 504 plans, but this should not affect grading.

Additionally, the presentation suggests the leniencies that were offered during the pandemic, which provided flexibility on assignments and due dates, should become permanent in an effort to avoid creating stress on the students. This is unacceptable! We need our students to learn responsibility and understand how to deal with stressful situations. Creating “safe spaces” for our students will do them no favors.

The board needs to answer to this. Now.
